The BinckBank Tour 2020 has acquired a new spot on the calendar! The only multi-day UCI WorldTour stage race in the Netherlands and Belgium will take place between 29th September and 3rd October. The shortened tour will not start in Friesland's Dokkum. The planned Grand Départ in the North of the Netherlands will be moved to 2021.
The UCI's recently released new cycling calendar has also created a spot for the BinckBank Tour, on the date that had been suggested by the organisation. The BinckBank Tour will be held in the week after the Cycling Road World Championships from Tuesday 29th September until Saturday 3rd October. The competition will be reduced to five days instead of the usual seven.
Unfortunately, this also means that the race will not start in Dokkum, as foreseen. The Friesian municipality Noardeast-Fryslân was going to link the Grand Départ to the Admiraliteitsdagen. This event had already been postponed by one year due to the coronacrisis. In 2021, the BinckBank Tour will leave from the Netherlands' northernmost city of Dokkum. By shortening the tour to five days it will also be easier for the caravan to head in the direction of the South of the Netherlands and Belgium more swiftly.
Race director Rob Discart is very pleased with this new date: "In the new autumn calendar, every single race faces considerably more competition than in any other normal year. The BinckBank Tour may coincide with the Flèche Wallone, but the nature of our race lends itself more to those riders specialised in the classics along flatter terrain, the Flandriens. They can get down to work in our race, shortly before the one-day races later in October. It is a shame that we need to move the start in Dokkum by one year; both we and the municipality Noardeast-Fryslân and the Province Fryslân were very much looking forward to it. However, we were very quick to agree that it is much better for everybody - and especially for the fans of cycling in the North of the Netherlands - to do it right in one go in 2021."
Councillor Pytsje De Graaf of the municipality Noardeast-Fryslân thinks that it is a pity that the BinckBank Tour will not start in her region this year: "It goes without saying that we are happy with the commitment that this tour will start in our region next year. The municipality Noardeast-Fryslân, in cooperation with the province and neighbouring towns, will welcome the BinckBank Tour with open arms next year too. When it will once again coincide with the organisation of the Admiraliteitsdagen."
Currently, the organisation of the BinckBank Tour is revising the initial course plans in consultation with the various start and finish locations. As soon as that puzzle has been completed, we will also know the new starting place for the 2020 edition.
