Alvaro Hodeg has won the fifth stage of the 2019 BinckBank Tour. The Colombian beat Sam Bennett and Edward Theuns in the bunch sprint. Tim Wellens kept his leader's jersey.

The 191.4 kilometre stage between Riemst and Venray was the longest stage the riders have to tackle in this BinckBank Tour. In theory the flat stage would prove to be the last chance for the sprinters, but the breakaway specialists tried to avoid that scenario.

The start of the race was relentless with an endless stream of attacks. After 40 kilometres a group of six riders seemed to have a shot at staying away, but the peloton reeled them back in. Eventually Sütterlin, Stannard, Riesebeek and Smit managed to escape. The four riders fought for a maximum break of 2m30 before the sprinters' teams started bringing down the gap. The breakaway was doomed to fail and with 4km to go the peloton swallowed up the leaders.

In the bunch sprint Alvaro Hodeg proved to be the quickest. The Colombian found a gap at the right time and managed to hold off Ireland's Sam Bennett, who won the first three bunch sprints of the Binckbank Tour. Edward Theuns was third. Tim Wellens retains his leaders' jersey ahead of Saturday's time-trial in The Hague, defending a lead of four seconds.
